Host and Organizers UAb

    Established in 1988, Universidade Aberta (UAb) is the Portuguese public higher education institution dedicated to Distance and eLearning. Fulfilling its mission, UAb has been a leader in the use of the most advanced methods and technologies to deliver high quality distance and eLearning to all. The university saves no geographical borders or physical barriers, and gives special emphasis to the dissemination of Portuguese language and culture, in particular amongst migrant communities and the Portuguese speaking countries.

    UAb offers all range of higher education programmes (Undergraduate, Master and Doctorate degrees) and lifelong learning courses. All are of which delivered in a fully online mode, since 2008. The university aplies a patented Virtual Pedagogic Model, which is a quality reference in Europe. This model resulted form UAb's expertise accumulated through its two decades of experience of quality distance learning practices and advanced research in the field.

    In 2010, Distance and eLearning practiced at UAb was awarded with the he UNIQUe Quality Label certificate for the use of ICT in Higher Education (Universities and Institutes) by EFQUEL - the European Foundation for Quality in eLearning. At the same year, UAb was also qualified by an international panel of independent experts as the reference institution for teaching in eLearning in Portugal. In 2011, UAb was awarded with the 1st Level of Excellency of the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM).



    The International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) is the leading global membership organization for open, distance, flexible and online education, including e-learning, and is open to institutions, educational authorities, commercial actors, and individuals.

    ICDE has consultative partner status with UNESCO and shares UNESCO's key value - the universal right to education for all. ICDE further derives its position from the unique knowledge and experience of its members throughout the world in the development and use of new methodologies and emerging technologies. ICDE was founded in 1938 in Canada as the International Council for Correspondence Education and today has members from over 60 countries worldwide.

    ICDE's Permanent Secretariat is in Oslo, Norway, and has been hosted by this country on a permanent basis since 1988. ICDE is supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research and by membership fees.



    Established in 1991, the European Distance and E-Learning Network (EDEN) is the largest and most dynamically developing professional community of experts and practitioners of electronic distance education in Europe. With more than 200 institutional members and over 2000 individual members in the Network of Academics and Professionals (NAP), representing 55 countries from all regions and continents, EDEN has been consistently instrumental in the promotion of networking, international co-operation and professional development.

    EDEN exists to share knowledge and improve understanding amongst professionals in distance and e-learning and to promote policy and practice across the whole of Europe and beyond. The network assists a wide range of institutions, networks and individuals to become involved in professional information and networking activities. It does so through the organization of acknowledged European conferences, its publications and information services, and by taking an active role in a wide range of important EU projects.

    EDEN has also proved successful with thematic activities such as school level distance education, and by contributing to, and promoting, 'cutting edge' research in the field. In addition, EDEN has also provided extensive support to the European Journal of Open, Distance and E-Learning (EURODL) and has established the EDEN Fellows, the first European think tank on distance and eLearning.

    EDEN is a not-for-profit organization, registered as a Limited Company under UK law. Since 1997 the Secretariat has been hosted by the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.
